Google: redesigned its logo for one dayGoogle has redesigned its logo for one day only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of toy brand Lego, even though it has a strict policy of not placing advertising on its iconic homepage. Google said the redesign did not involve any payment from the Danish firm because it does not place advertising on its homepage, and instead said it was part of its long-running tradition of creating "special designs for quirky anniversaries".  Google logo has been recreated using Lego bricks. The second "g" in Google features a Lego character and if a cursor is placed over the logo a window pops up which reads: "50th anniversary of the Lego brick".

In 2004, Google created a design to commemorate Richard Branson's SpaceShipOne wining the X Prize. You can view this design and others here.

A Google spokesman said that the design also reflected a fondness for Lego from the company's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

The spokesman said: "This Monday, January 28, is the 50th anniversary of the invention of the Lego building brick.

"Larry and Sergey, Google's co-founders, used Lego bricks as low-cost hard disk drive enclosures in the early days so it's something that's close to our heart as a company."

The redesign comes a year after Lego awarded its inaugural Outreach award to Google, as recognition for its efforts in encouraging young children to become involved in science, computers, and technology.
